Mother’s Day –Celebrations & Gifts

Mother’s Day is a special day set aside to honour women who are mothers.  She is made to feel well appreciated and respected. The concept of Mother’s Day has its roots in the practices of the ancient Greeks and Romans. To celebrate the perfect mom, the perfect gift is needed on this special day.

This is a day dedicated to thanking mothers for shouldering the child-rearing responsibilities with all the sacrifices and hardships that this entails.

Across the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated in more than 50 countries.  And while they don’t all however, celebrate it on the same day, the purpose and essence is the same throughout, showing gratitude to mothers for their efforts. Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in many countries including Australia, Canada, US and India when children bedeck their mothers with flowers, cards and chocolates.

Evolution of mother’s day

The Mother’s Day tradition can be traced back to activities in the times of the ancient Greeks, where festivals to were held to honour Rhea, the mother of the gods and to the UK where history records the celebration of a Mothering Sunday.  The day became more renowned though the efforts of pioneering women such as by Julia Ward Howe, (writer of the Battle Hymn of the Republic) who stated organizing Mother’s Day in 1872,  Mrs. Juliet Calhoun Blakely who on her birthday, Sunday 11 May 1877, stepped to the pulpit after the abrupt withdrawal of her son and took over the rest of the service, calling for other mothers to join with her and Philadelphia schoolteacher  Anna M. Jarvis who in 1907 began a movement to set up a national Mother’s Day in honour of her mother.
